Took GTI through a few moderately deep areas yesterday, now engine whirrs on throttle application

As title states, on throttle application, engine noises makes like a whirring sound. Impossible to get a sound clip since my exhaust is too loud. Unfortunately, I had to drive the car through some deeper water areas but nothing I haven't experienced before since I live in south FL. None of the water got above the door sill as far as I know unless it splashed up. Thinking maybe just needs to dry out a few days? I can't recall if I had this issue before but I remember something similar.

Boost pressure doesn't appear to have decreased, no obvious issues on throttle application, no oil pressure light, no CEL, no codes that I'm aware of.

Possible wet alternator?

I'd almost wonder if it's the clutch being submerged if it's manual. It sits right near the engine. I'd give it a bit of time.

Should've gave more info, it's a DSG.
Gonna check the oil to make sure it's not a milkshake, but I don't know how it would've gotten into there anyway. Like I said, no water came up over the hood or anything, just moderate depth when driven at speed likely splashed up somewhere. It's still humid and rainy. No chance to dry out yet from yesterday. I figure it may be an accessory belt bearing that's wet or something... possibly the alternator. Neither of which appear to be having issues right now. The A/C doesn't work due to a bad compressor sensor and likely a leak somewhere in the freon according to VCDS, so I can't test the A/C easily, but I noticed it had come on and stayed on for a few hours as I was driving and desperately trying to defog my windows with heat.

New sound profile. The sound is most definitely coming from the front or front passenger side of the car. It sounds like when you try to drill into a dense piece of wood with a weak drill and it gradually slows down and makes that pathetic whirring sound. I assume this is the alternator bearing starting to go.

video was taken from under the driver's side front. When revving it, you can crisply hear the reeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrr sound. That's what I hear but louder. Also, great addition to my issue is the fact that I got and intermittent gear disengagement fault on my way home. Wrench flashed over gear number on MFD and wouldn't switch out of first gear. Turning the car off and back on got me back to somewhat normal, but 1st gear hesitates to engage slightly by a fraction of a second. I reset the DSG using VCDS and got around my parking garage quick enough to get into fourth gear for a second. I don't think this solved my issue, but I'm thinking a bad DMF maybe or Mechunit... both?

Way above my pay grade haha. I don't have much dsg experience, but I would think that you need someone who does. Someone who can trace faults.

Had to drive through water like that in mine and it sucked water into the trans and ruined it...good luck :(

I want to believe I'm safe from water intrusion on the DSG unit. Even if the filter cover was loose, or the drain plug, RMS, etc... I guess we'll see this week. I googled it to see if anyone else ever had water intrusion into the DSG and there was one instance on a TDI. Something about the DSG being cooled by the engine coolant and this somehow allowed coolant or water into the case? Doesn't make sense to me.

Ok so I believe we've found the culprit to both issues... which happened to occur simultaneously.
The sound he plays in the video when showing a bad A/C compressor is nearly identical to mine. Video here:

When I had the defrost on to defog the windows in the cabin while it was monsoon'ing out, the a/c switch was active, not that it makes a huge difference but my a/c hasn't worked in over 4 years. That said, this likely put strain on the bearing attempting to run and it seized or broke... that or water sullied it.

The DSG errors seem to be a separate issue, shop says the OEM unit is dead. I'll ask if they found water intrusion in the oil or anything when I go down there to drop off my RKX solenoid for the compressor.

So it looks like this old dog bitch is getting a refurbed DSG and likely a new or refurbed compressor. Big steps toward being bearable to drive again and stuff I already had tacked onto my laundry list of things I wanted to do at some point anyway.

FWIW, the refurb DSG swap is going to cost about $2500 for filter, fluid, case, and mech unit. I'd say that's a damn steal... especially if they warranty it for 1 yr or more.
