Alright so my compressor hasn't been working in some time, more than a year, and I bought the RKX solenoid a while back and have been meaning to install it, but no shop nearby wants to tackle the job, and if they do, they want upwards of $400+ for it... quoting removal of HVAC system or front bumper cover etc. If I jack the car up enough, I can see the damn thing myself sitting on the compressor, but I have no way to evacuate the charge system as to responsibly do the job. I understand people normally just dump the freon to atmosphere, which I've considered, but I didn't want to be a jackass.
Also... why is every shop under the impression that this requires some major tear down of the HVAC, or removal of the front bumper cover? Every DIY I see does it from directly under the car, or they remove the right front tire wheel liner and go in from there. Seems excessive for a maybe/maybe not fix.
How would you all approach this?
