Each year Motor Magazine in Australia hosts the biggest Hot Tuner challenge of the year.
The field consists of 30 cars ranging from mild to wild local, euro and Japanese cars.
Rules
1. The challenge is broken down to three distinct groups based on vehicle prices at the dealership. The Golf R falls into the Under $75,000 category.
2. Each event has one pro driver driving all of the vehicles to level the playing field and focus on the vehicles capabilities.
3. Fuel is controlled. Each vehicle gets the same 98 RON Fuel (Similar to US 93 (R+M)/2 Fuel).
4. Each vehicle gets the same set of tires.
5. Once the vehicle enters the gates, it may not be changed. This means no ECU changes. No engine changes. No tire changes. No handling changes. The car must be run in the same configuration, and not setup differently for each test.
Scoring
Scoring is baed on points. The top 5 vehicles have a weighted point range. (50, 45, 40, 36, 32, 30 followed by single digit decreases per position).
Test
Sydney's drag way is used for acceleration and braking tests.
A Mainline Dyno is used for power measurements.
A track test on SMSP's South Circuit (a technical track filled with elevation changes, fast/slow, on/off camber corners).
Finally a figure eight loop is used to test maximum agility.
