Chains or Snow Tires?

So, I have a 2011 GTI. And I've come to the point in my life where I'll be heading up to the snow a bit more often.

I live in San Francisco and will be heading up to South Lake Tahoe (3 hour drive) often the next few months. And possibly next year.

I know snow tires are a bit more of an investment, but chains on the current Detroit ones might not be the best idea?

So what's the best option if money wasn't an issue: Snow tires or Chains for the front wheels?

chains seem rough in my eyes... go with snow tires and you use them couple years.

Napa sells some snow cables for FWD low profile tire cars that I've had my eyes on. 80 bucks a set and you can store them under the rear floor I think when not needed.
