160-220 to buy a house... sigh..

a shitty house in a shitty neighborhood in this town costs around 500k, and any house i would want to live in around here starts at about 750k..

Exactly why I moved out of the bay area. This house in the south bay area, $550-$700k. Here in the Sacramento area, $175k. Yeah I miss the bay area but to be out of an apartment and into a house is worth it.

Back on subject, keep your car. So what if you gotta sacrifice something like the type of food you eat to make the difference, at least you can have fun on the way to the grocery store.

I've taken the cheaper and more reliable route before, all I wanted to do was get out of it after a year. My cheapest hobby is driving the GTI around, I can't even imagine being so amused in a used Civic.

200k to buy a house is f'ing ridiculous. i cant even imagine. i could do that today w/15% down.

its really bad where you are Plac. most of my family is from there, lives there etc. my grandmas house, which she bought in the early 60s for like $7000 is in millbrae, way up helen drive, almost to the entrance of the 280 there, and its now worth around 900k - 1mil

its a 1600 sq ft., 3+2 single story ranch style house w/a 2 car garage. hasn't been updated in decades. she could sell it now, probably in a week as is for a million. she worked in a factory her whole life. how many factory workers do you know today who can buy a house, practically anywhere?

could have fooled me. ive lost count of all the guys on this forum who go on about their homes and multiple cars and epic jobs. seems like everyone is flourishing on here, or at least they say they are

Having a lot of nice things doesn't mean jack if you can't afford them. I don't think many people are going to tell you about their debt to income ratio or how they are living above their means.

So why do all of you socal guys stay then, if it is so debilitatingly expensive to live out there? *inb4trashtalkaboutanywherebutsocal* If you guys really wanted a house, you would move to somewhere where they are in your price range, right? You must not want a house that bad?

The point is it's pretty rare for a 24 year old to be ready to buy a house. You must be very well off for your location to even be able to consider that. I'm renting at 41, and a house is no where in sight for me. I guess if you can do it, go for it. Better to start early, then your house will be worth a lot more by the time youre 40. Also, don't wait till you're 40 to have kids if you plan to.. looking like i got a 2nd one on the way. ugh.. im old...

Dude u live in the Bay Area. One of the most beautiful areas in the USA. You'd be lucky to buy a house for 500k. OP lives in shit hole cracker center Alabama, no offense :paddle: Bay Area is just beautiful man. I'd love to live there!

I can ony speak for myself, and I have many regrets, I bougnt my house 15+ yrs ago, and put down 25% at the time, payed $165,000 for a 3 br raised bungalow on a 62x135 lot in the burbs now worth $320,000 maybe?, sacraficed driving a shitty car for 16 yrs to pay it off, no major renos except windows and doors, landscaping, all which I did myself to save cash, but I wish I would have spent the extra $20,000 for a better house at the time, and I'd be happy now living in the house I'd pictured raising a family in, and said house would be worth +$1000,000 more than current house I bought at the time, anyways once you own a house it's like owning a GTI you will never be satisified, you will always want to mod something, which will cost more money, especially if you buy an older home like I did, all I can say is be true to yourself, keep your car, it makes you happy, you will always want more, thats only human nature, try to find a extra way to make money, maybe personal training or building other peoples VW'dubs, save for what you really want, but don't wait to long that the prices get out of range, only you can shape your destiny. good luck on your quest!

uh, because southern california rules. CA in general rules. no other state quite like it. political BS aside, geographic diversity speaking, theres nothing like it. i live somewhere that literally within an hour depending on direction i could be at some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, pristine deserts, snow/skiing, hiking/mountains, national forest, urban nightlife, music scene/entertainment, beautiful women, FOOD, culture, etc. etc. if it exists and you want it, its here. Bottom line. i mean come on man, its almost a cliche. 'california'. the beautiful girl in the movie never says "im gettin out of this shit town and going to scranton, PA." sure there is traffic sometimes, and certain areas are pure hell but overall, it beats anywhere ive ever been in the US.

location is everything.

id rather rent and live somewhere i want to live than own a house somewhere i don't. i have been all over the country, many times over and nowhere compares to southern california, or CA in general for that matter. theres a reason why everyone moves away from 'there' to come 'out here'. what does owning a house matter if i have to live in atlanta, GA or something. id kill myself. and this is where i live. where i'm from. its very rare that someone born and raised in CA would consider moving somewhere else.. if i didn't mind the rain, Seattle maybe.. I like Philadelphia, but its pretty one dimensional in comparison.. NYC, no thank you. rats in a cage. other places are nice to visit, but to live, no.. and the red states? god, gross. what is it 1953? separate drinking fountains? they can have their cheap houses...

Idk man I don't think CA is the greatest. There are many pros that is for sure. But the cons really bring CA down. But like you said location is what keeps me here.
Beach 30 mins away
Snow 45 mins away
Desert 45 mins away
And the chicks. Lots of hot chicks everywhere lol.

McQ, I share some of your views, and some not. But you are always all over the map on this....I was born in the midwest, lived in the Pacific Northwest, and now the desert...Highs and lows to everywhere man. But you definitely always bait people with the "damn, brah, that affordable housing must be nice, unlike getting this crazy place I live in, and then, when posed with that alternative, say you'd rather be slow roasted over hot coals than leave SoCal. Pick a lane, brah.

You can't have a wife who is both a pornstar and a nobel prize winner.

Nor can you have 4 bedrooms/baths and 3000 sq. ft. for $250K in Southern California. But you can in Minnesota.

Embrace your election.

ill be the first to list all the cons.. there are too many to list. overpopulation, 'diversity' isn't always a good thing.. but then again, ive been to plenty of places in america where all you see is obese white people walking around, and thats no picnic.. taxes = ridiculous. personal freedoms.. we practically live in a police state. i could go on. but still, overall.. dude, go live in columbus, OH for a few months and get back to me

Dude keep the car and just sell some mods! You owe nothing on your car, you like it, so why sell? Make a few grand off the mods and wait for that turbo Civic SI to be released :)

I've lived in Columbus and San Diego... I'd almost rather live in Columbus.... San Diego is nice and all.... But it has plenty of downsides.

That's kinda what I was trying to understand. Seems like he is complaining about his situation, then complaining more about alternatives.

Anyhow, BOT, gamblers, if you take away anything from this thread, it should be to ensure you are sure in what you and your wife want AND what is best for you and your future family.
