Advice on MK 6 Golf alloys

Hi, i'm new on here so please go gentle.

I've just ordered a Mk 6 Golf TDi and wondered if any of you could clarify and also advise on the following being the experts.

I want to put 18 inch alloys on when i get the car. The standards are 16 inch which i'm not keen on. I would probably offset the cost of changing them by selling the originals. One dealer told me you can't put 18 inch on the model i have opted for (2.0 TDi 140 SE 3 door), is this true? If not could anyone advise how i can locate some 18 inch alloys, i want to keep to near standard VW alloys but not off the Mk 5, possibly the Vancouvers or something else anyone thinks would be suitable.

Other thing i was'nt sure on was the spolier to the rear hatch, is this standard on the model i have gone for.:iono:

There is no spoiler on the car unless you bought it with votex kit.
18" wheels are no problem, i have 19" + lowered suspension
My car came with 18" Vancouver wheels so why would the dealer tell you it would not fitt?

The rear spolier i have seen was in the VW sales brochure so i'm sure it must be a standard fitment on some models.

He mentioned that the 18's were only available as standard on the GT and GTi modells due to suspension geometery, clearance etc.

On an SE spec Golf you don't want bigger than 16" alloys unless its lowered, so your dealer is partially correct.

Thats interesting, there is an option to put 17's on when selecting your options, whats the reason for stayting with 16's, do you think they may look out of place?:yikes:

The 17" option includes lowered sports suspension, which is IMO essential in order for it to look 'right' with wheels bigger than 16"

Ah, i see.:w00t: So if i want to change the alloys in the future i would need to spec the 17's now so the suspension is adjusted to suit at the factory or could i just get this done by a suspension specialist as and when i purchase the alloys.

To preserve the warranty of your car it would be worth speccing the 17" alloys with sports suspension.

Interesting I asked my salesman about warrenty and altering the car, he said the only way its likely to effect the warrenty is if there is a failure due to a result of what I have done, eg I put the wrong wheels on and the car crashes its down to me, if however the engine fireballs its nothing to do with the wheels.

I deffinately think lowing is a good idea, I just put the GTI 18s(replicas) on my 'S' TDi and it could do with going down a bit...

I cant see any reason why dealers would be feeding you lies about not being able to fit 18s, the spec of the 18s I have are factory and has just a 2.4mm larger rolling radius which is bugger all! When I ordered my 'S' you could only get 15" steels or 15" alloys, not much choice else I would have ordered stuff with the car! But at £375 for 15 alloys and just £544 for 18s with tyres delivered to my door balanced, its a worthy upgrade

Certainly makes the car drive a bit better, although I think it may have instantly affected fuel economy(doing more motorway miles tomorrow and see how it performs), still time to chat to vw about that lowering stick!
