blinking check engine light

Ready to race!
Today while I was cruising, check engine light flashed couple of seconds and disappeared. I did not feel anything strange with my car.
Do you have any idea what went wrong?
Thanks.

Normally flashing CELs are misfires. Check coils and plugs. Could be time to swap either.

Misfire. Blinking check engine light means the engine is misfiring. Like stated above it might be time to switch out your plus and or coil packs. One way to check is to pull the coil packs out one or more might have some discoloration on them which will indicate the coil pack and or spark plug going out.

Also, make sure the coilpacks are properly seated. Take your engine shroud off and press down on each.

I have been chasing the flashing CEL for a couple of weeks. Earler this year I replaced the timing belt, thermostat, water pump, oil pump, coil pack, wires, serpentine belt, alternator, valve cover gaskets, and a ton of vaccum tubing. Car ran great until this new CEL. According to repeated crap scans, the #3 cylinder was missing, the cam shaft sensor was faulty or most likely the coil pack was bad. I checked out the plug wire by swapping them around and it isn't bad, replaced the spark plug. No change, so I replaced the coil pack, and cam sensor and still no change. The darned CEL still flashes but not under acceleration load. I have done the water spray looking for a short and the propane test looking for a vacuum leak...no change.
I need to find a VAG-Com in the Akron Ohio area or some one who has an idea of what it could possibly be. It's a 2000 Audi A6 2.8l with 199,000 miles, but normally runs great.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

200,000 miles. There's an electrical short somewhere. If your CEL is flashing under zero load but not under load, I would assume it's erroneous.

Lately I replaced the spark plugs. I will ckeck tomorrow if the coil packs are seated properly.

Update:
Today I was at the dealer, they found a misfire in cylinder 2, checked the coil packs, plugs.. they also performed a compression test. all were ok. in the end they told me injector, which is 300 dollar. what do you think it? injection problems are common with GTIs?
when the cell was blinking, I did not feel anything wrong with the car, it blinked around 10 seconds and disappeared. Everything runs ok.
Another thing, last 2-3 months, during cold start, sometimes I feel a small vibration in idle just for a short period at 1200 rpm till it goes down 700. and little hesitation when I start driving again for a short period.

That's a possibility for sure. Ask the dealership if it's still under TSB or extended warranty. I believe injectors on certain model years are warrantied.

i had CELs a while back, and the mechanic replaced the coil packs, spark plugs, did compression tests, and still didn't make the CEL go away. they said the only way to find out was to look at the injectors. i told them to go ahead, and when they got there the injectors were clogged up with carbon build up. they replaced all 4.

luckily for me, it was covered under the extended warranty and VW sent me a check!
