I ran the Schroth harnesses in my MKIV GTI and my MKV GTI and wore them daily. They saved my ass in my MKIV as I was rear ended at approx 120KPH, which taco'd the back end and sent me into the pick up ahead of me.

They worked the best in the MKIV IMO, because both the MKV and MKVI have the lip on the head rest that causes the head rest to be lifted higher when your harness is on and cinched up.

This also makes wearing a helmet for track days somewhat uncomfortable due to your head being pushed forward.

I did look at having a slot cut through the head rest at the level of the top of the seat so this wouldn't happen, but have not it yet as I have not run a harness in either my MKVI GTI or R.

The Schroth harnesses are a pretty easy install, especially if you go with these ones:

would that take up any of the back seat space? i have a 4dr and i drive my brothers around a lot in the back seat. i was looking at some harness bars but wasnt sure how much space they took up

the beauty with this one is after you install the female ends, the whole thing can be clipped in/out at your convenience. it's a great set-up and I kinda wish it was available when i installed mine, but mine could still be un-clipped behind the drivers seat and the rear portion laid flat on the rear seat for people to sit there.

lots of debate on running harnesses without a cage.... any rollover = crushed spine.

Also if you have a harness, should a HANS device be mandatory with your helmet?

Not necessarily, but if a sanctioned event, I could see that being possible.

I would just run seat straps from G Force or something ( I have a set somewhere), in lieu of harnesses, but yeah, this is a debated topic for track guys, with most siding on not running harnesses unless you have a roll cage.
