Drag Race Newbie
2012 GTI, CBFA, APR Stage 2. 96k miles, valves were cleaned a couple months ago, recently cleaned air filter too. No issues with power or running during the entire time I've had the car.
Recently I've been driving less as I drive company vehicles at work, and my commute is only about 7 minutes. I am often out of town, and my car will sit for days at a time. I give her a bit of love on weekends; we only use my car on the weekends and I drive her like I miss her. She hasn't given me any trouble, though...
Until today.
Went to an appointment early in the morning, car ran fine. It stalled when I started after the appointment, which was weird, but it started right back up. Tank was empty so I went and refueled (Chevron, as I always do). Drove to work with no incident. Plenty of power, no hesitation, no issues.
Got back in my car after work to drive home, and it wouldn't start. Cranking, no fire. Finally started but immediately stalled; this happened a few times. Got it home and started troubleshooting. Pulled these codes:
So.
- Car runs and drives fine as long as I keep it above idle.
- Idle is normal for the most part; smooth and regular. It can be seconds or minutes before it stalls, and when it does it is sudden as if the ignition was switched off.
- I pulled the plugs; they looked fairly normal except for a bit of carbon. No oily residue, no gas smell. I replaced them anyway.
- I'm running ECS red top coils. I've swapped them between cylinders; still getting misfires on 2 and 3.
- Power is normal as is throttle response. Car is driveable except for stalling while idling.
- The stall doesn't happen if throttle is applied, regardless of how much. I can hold it at 1000 RPM idle and it'll be fine.
- I can occasionally prevent it from stalling if I give it a little gas when it stalls.
As a side note, the cooling fans have been running constantly with the igniton on. The car can be cold and the engine not running, and the fans will ramp up to 100% for no reason, and stay on for a few minutes after the engine is turned off. If I have the AC running for a while the fans will cycle a few times before turning off. Here's the code:
