Speaker upgrades on RNS 315

Is it a headunit need for better sound or upgrading on the RNS 315 be fine?

It's pretty much expected that even a basic aftermarket stereo will have a better audio signal than an OEM head unit. I have not personally tested the RNS315, but if it has a flat, fullrange output, then it'll do the job. It would be worth finding out at what volume level the signal clips, so that you know your maximum usable output, that information may be available online somewhere (I'll see if I can find anything). I know the base model 310 head unit was terrible, distortion kicked in really low in the volume range. There is also some processing going on to accommodate the OEM speakers (and the different audio packages, like Fender and Dynaudio), you would want to turn this processing off using Vagcom, as long as that head unit is supported.

I would highly recommend using an aftermarket head unit. An aftermarket head unit will be superior in every single way, except maybe for matching the OEM aesthetic.
