Turbo Replacement

Hey all..

Wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 2011 GTI and my stock turbo needs to be replaced. Just wondering if I need to buy a new one from VW or aftermarket.. or maybe go with a used one?

If anyone has any insight to this, and if anyone can give me an idea on cost (parts and labour).. It will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Great time to look at k04 or bigger turbo. I would look for a used oem if you're on a tight budget. Somebody has one sitting on the shelf.

Yup - oem+ turbo is a good time.

I have an ihi with very low mileage taken off when I went k04 4 years ago sitting around. Can ship either from the US or if you wait till July 20-21, from inside CA.

depends on what you're budget is and how long you plan on keeping the car.
Do you know what made your current turbo crap out? Sure as heck don't want that to happen again.
What's your mileage like?

If you chose stock used turbo (hundreds) + the cost of replacing (hundreds)

if you go new.. pricier obviously.

If you go K04..APR or otherwise it's the cost of turbo + install + tune + downpipe (to reap full minimum benefits) = thousands.. .unless you can do the work yourself.

Budget is the weak/strong point here.

BUT>>> I would consider what made the turbo fail in the first place to make sure it's not oil starvation/ oil supply.. coked supply etc to make sure it's was maybe just the turbo.

If you know someone that could rebuild it for you and make it bullet proof with stronger internals that's an option as well.. just time consuming

Julius.. used to work @ Bramgate VW.. has a shop east of Torbram (Steeles/Derry road area) 905-461-0302. A no BS kind of guy. Cranky, but good work.

Thanks for the responses guys..

Problem with my turbo is the wastegate. Doesn't shut properly anymore and I'm losing all kinds of power, not to mention the rattling noise that comes from it.

I have a ton of km on the car.. 275,000 as of now. Apr stage 2 tune with turbo back exhaust, etc...

I will be keeping the car until it dies, makes the most sense for me at the moment, hence me wanting to fix the turbo and at least enjoy driving it.

Not looking for a new turbo just because of how many km's I have. A used makes the most sense.

I have an OEM turbo from a 2011 GTI with 45000 km on it. nothing is wrong with it. swapped to the K04 APR turbo so the OEM turbo is wrapped and stored inside my Ottoman lol. If your interested to buy it, shoot me a text at 6478836688.

Boom.. You now have two local OEM euro's to choose from. Don't waste your time trying to repair the turbo wastegate

Ps.. I have 290kms on my original bo.. Planning to keep it too however when /if the turbo shits the bed I'm going K04 +Down pipe..the internals if the look good won't touch em. If not... replace what's weak and put another 300k on it.

Good luck! Let us know what u do nd if you're wrenching it yourself I wouldn't mind helping out to learn as much as I can!

Damn mine has the exact same problem. At the exact same time as you. In July. But half the mileage on my 2012. And have a tight budget.

I had the same question. OEM + replacement only options I found were IHI and some Tiguan guys went Borg Warner OEM replacement. Not sure what gen.

Frankenturbo was another option. But needed custom tuning for full potential and I heard a few people weren't too happy with it.
