I had this issue about 6 months ago, luckily I was still under warranty but they had to replace the entire radiator as the sensor is built in.

Engine light on and ODB says P2185. Replaced the upper sensor (close to vacuum pump.) Engine light back on. Coolant level is good. The coolant temperature gauge reads just as it should - starts cool and progresses to desired temp never goes over.
Any clues on next steps to fix this? (2.5L Mk6 2011)
