Loud screeching noise from engine bay

Have you been able to take apart anything and get back there to take a look?

Haven't been able to do anything with the car because I hit a telephone pole with my daily in freezing rain a few weeks ago, just got that back yesterday!

I have the exhaust manifold gasket as well as the vacuum pulp gasket. My diff shipped yesterday as well. Just need to order a flywheel then I'm taking everything apart. The flywheel I ordered was damaged in transport? I'm hoping the first week in April to start everything. Going to address the all of the oil leaks except the cam cradle as well. Will save that for May or June and do the cam chain tensioner. Hopefully that will resolve everything. I will update in this thread with results

Wasn't the pcv valve then? They screech like mad when they go bad

I've had the PCV go. This is a different noise and isn't acompanied by irradiate idle and a check engine light. This noise doesn't effect drive ability whatsoever, maybe losing a psi or two of boost if that even, hard to tell because my clutch can't hold third gear any more

Not yet. I am going to do it this week hopefully. Just checking to see if this got rid of that noise. Also how long is this job?

I'd assuming changing the exhaust manifold gasket is probably a 6-7 hour job if it goes smoothly. It's no different than replacing the turbo really.

Damn lol. Is there any damage caused, over the long run, from not fixing the gasket leak/bolt?

The screech noise is a pre turbo noise not an exhaust manifold gasket. You can verify this by reinstalling your stock intake. If the sound level does not change or diminish then check boost pipes first.

Exhaust manifold gasket is pre-turbo. The sound he said he is having is this.

That was my car making that noise. When I went back there it was a snapped manifold stud and a blown gasket. Looked like this.

It's not too bad replacing the manifold gasket if your a DIY'er, its getting the snapped stud out if that's what happened. Turbo manifold was slighted warped for that exhaust port too. Question for me was what came first, the snapped stud, the gasket, or warped manifold? I tried to argue with VW to pay for it but they said all three were not warranty parts. Then I tried to argue that the warped manifold is part of the turbo which is warranty. Then I tried to argue its an emissions issue which is a warranty item too. No budge, $800 to have a specialist come and drill it out.

Long term issue I noticed was it would leave my engine bay incredibly hot.

I've put the stock intake back on and the noise was still present, and replaced every o ring between the turbo and throttle body and boost leak tested the entire system. I've had the turbo output pop off before so I know what that screech sound is like. The reason a broken exhaust manifold gasket would make this noise on these motors is the back pressure caused by the smaller stock turbos.

Hmm so it's not something that is an urgent-must-fix?

I've had the noise since October of '14 with no issues other than being annoyed by it and trying to chase it. If you have actually have the same noise I'd say it isn't urgent, but there are a lot of similar sounds from other boost or vacuum leaks that it could be too

If my manifold is warped then I won't have this noise resolved until I upgrade the turbo in the year, hopefully it's just a busted gasket
