DD brake pad suggestions

WildRover1916

New member
After much neglect and now feelings of guilt, I need to show my GTI some lovin'. First up on my lost of things to do is brake pads. I am at 57K and the pads need replaced, maybe the rotors too.

I was wondering if there was any consensus on a good brake pad set up for a daily driver with aspirations of embarrassing myself one day at an autocross event?

Follow up, I know that "they" recommend replacing the rotors when you do new pads. I get the reason that you want to provide fresh surfaces and so on and so forth. If my stock rotors are not shot, is it worth it to replace? if so, what would be a sensible upgrade?

Thanks for any suggestions

Stoptech pads. I'm going 30k on them and love the bite. Price is always good on them too. Get the Tyrol caliper stiffening kit while you are at it.

+1 on the TyrolSport brake caliper stiffening kit. Much better pedal "feel" in my opinion, much firmer, not mushy like the brakes are stock.

I'm also about to pull the trigger on the stoptech. How's the brake dust? I saw some people here said they end to produce a lot of dust.

Also which is better? Stoptech pads + Tylor stiffening kit or Stoptech + SS brake line?

I have the stoptech pads. They're overrated IMO. They don't dust a ton, but they don't bite a ton, either. They don't have the best feel (I have a stock brake system otherwise, working on that). They've got great feedback if you bed them every week, but that's not exactly economical. Lastly they don't hold up to temperature all that well. On the track I didn't get more than a lap or two more out of them than the stock pads before they were fading away.

I'll be trying the Hawk HP+ after these. Maybe even go super expensive with my pads.

Maybe it's because I have gloss black wheels, but my Stoptech pads dust like crazy. I'll clean them and then go a week before they're turning brown again. I've heard good things about the EBC Reds in terms of dust, but I'm not sure how well they'd hold up on the track. I'm still on the search for a pad with decent performance that doesn't dust a lot.

hmm in that case I might either go with EBC red or yellow. Hawk HP+ looks good but its a bit too expensive...

Tyrolsport caliper bushings really got rid of some of the slop in the brakes. I also had EBC redstuff, they are a great upgrade over OEM with minimal dust. I didn't get to use them on the track much but for DD I would recommend them. I now have Yellowstuff and EBC sport slotted rotors. Again, another small increase in performance. The bite is much increased and I'm still getting used to them. I haven't had them long enough to comment on dust.

yeah the stoptechs dust quite a bit, Im ok with their performance for my uses, but I dont think I'd put them on my daily driver after using them on my other car.

They dust a lot. On clean wheels, I can go about 10 miles before I notice it. White wheels and Stoptechs pads isn't the best combination lol.

Agreed. The stoptechs have good feel and bite right after they're bedded in. But a few days of light DD braking and they go back to feeling as mushy as stock. Also had them on my bmw and they felt the same on that car... solid after bed in, soft after a week.

I'm thinking of just going crazy and getting endless mx72 pads... sourcing them is the main problem.

Endless MX72 is a great - if not the best - street and light track pad.

+ B-spec + HC+ etc..

With any of these don't miss to fit Tyrol caliper bushings, do proper
bed in, use at least DOT4 fluid and swap it every 12 to 24 months.

Track and autocross geeks also need improved brakes ventilation
and some VCDS changes to the brake assist.
