This Generation is not to be sold in the US, but the next supposedly will be. Built off of the Golf platform. What is your take and would you have bought this instead of what you have if it were available?

What I'm thinking is that should VW cheapen the next gen Golf, this might be my next ride.

Any overseas members who have experience with the A1 please comment.

I saw a couple when I was in the UK last week, very sharp looking cars.

Used to be stationed at Kelley in Stuttgart-Möhringen just to the east. Haven't decided where to stay if I get cleared for the time off, but might stay in the old neighborhood. That would make the rental an easy hop on the S-Bahn unless things have changed.

As to power, if it's based on the Golf they could probably pack more engine under the hood like they do for US spec.

My fiancee lived in Plieningen for sometime and I was in Stuttgart almost every weekend. As for the A1 itself, it's a peppy little car like I said above, but the styling of the rear just doesn't do it for me, for the price you're better off getting a fully loaded Polo or the Polo GTI for a little more.

Nice link on the A1.
What I started the thread on was this could be an option if VW takes the Golf VII the Jetta route (cheaper materials & made in US or Mexico).

I have a new, and paid for, Mk VI that I will trade in 2-3 years. If they mess up the MkVII this will be on my short list.

This site has more than a few European members and expat Americans. It would be nice to hear the take of a Golf owner on the A1 as Audi is planning to bring it to the US by the time I'll be looking.

I work for Audi (and dont bring it up often in here). I had a chance to drive the A1 1.2 TDI (with DSG) on a track against the Mini. The A1 out handled it by miles. It was a tad slow as you could imagine but i LOVED it. I too would look at one if the American-ize the Golf. I even got to see the 4 door version behind closed doors with the etron and A6 at the time. We were there to race the A7. This was last Oct.

killer car.
