Yeah that is extremely excessive for some reason. My car was 86k when I first did my valves and they didn't look nearly that bad.

That's not that bad after 80k, mine were close to that. I'd be more concerned about all that dirt though, how did that get around the manifold? Do you park outside in a dusty area err?

I was wondering about the dirt. Car is garaged at home and at school. Probably some dust getting in from not having the rain tray hood seal.

Guys check this out:

I did this last night and am very impressed with the results. Engine is now super smooth and quiet, power and response are up. Mpg was better for this morning's commute. Quite happy. I used the 2 parts mineral spirits, 1 part naptha, 1 part fuel mix. Maybe $30 in materials. Car runs better than when I bought it at 38k (65k now). Think I am going to do this every other oil change now. Hope it helps someone else.

Happy boostin.

Humble Mechanic did a Q&A yesterday and someone asked about this method.

His opinion is that this method might help with cylinders #2/#3 but not with #1/#4

I;m going to do this job one weekend soon cause I'm suffering from rough idle on a car with 140,000km on it. I think it's time. I wanted to ask for a consensus on what you guys have found works best as the cleaning agent? I can't get the GM top engine cleaner anywhere up here. I see this B12 chemtool is available on amazon Canada so that might work.

Well that was 8 hours of hell. There should be a support group for anyone who's had to deal with the God damn intake support bracket. What a .....
This carbon cleaning has changed my car, is crazy

I realized today that catch cans will do very little to resolve this issue. I think the bigger problem is turbo blow by in this system

Yeah, it's pretty well known catch cans don't help the issue, neither does wmi, unless the valves were spotless when the system was installed, and even then, it only slows the buildup, but it still happens. It's found that there's a chemical reaction to the metal on the valves. I posted a link a few pages back. Archoil is something I've been wanting to try since you apply it to both the oil and the gas.

Here's the link again http://www.oilem.com/turbo-fuel-str...jection-carbon-build-up-problem/#comment-1805

On a side note, I have complained to vw about this problem and was suggested a vw additive thats new, it also has been mentioned that since it's a gas only additive that it barely gets to the valves. When I explained this to them, they insisted that I try it and if it didn't fix the issue, they would be willing to work with me to try something else. Problem is this is my firsturbo, and last German cars. I simply don't want to mod anymore, to many headaches, but that's another issue.

After trying almost every solution to reducing carbon in DI engines, the most effective has been running an aux fuel system. Even though it injects fuel only under load, the detergents in fuel are very well designed to "clean". Starting to see OEMs return to a dual fuel solution on new engines to support flex fuel as well as keep the valves clean.

The image below speaks for itself and this is only using throttle body aux fuel injection. Valves were never cleaned.

Jesus christ my mileage is better since scraping that crap out... summer gas might contribute to that a bit but jesus....
