Both aircraft were operated by the Commemorative Air Force, and flying in an air show in Dallas. The flight going on was to showcase the “bomber escort” where they fly the fighters and patrol planes around the bombers to demonstrate/pay homage the bombing missions in WW2.
There is a video from a McDonald’s parking lot where you see two fighters turning inside the B-17’s lumbering left turn, then the P-63 appears to be falling off that line in a turn rate that ends up right at the B-17. The P-63’s bank looks like it gave the plane a nose high attitude in relation to the B-17, so the pilot couldn’t have seen it till the very last moment. The “aye dios mio” video shows the P-63 possibly making an abrubt attitude change just prior to impact, probably when the B-17’s port wingtip came into view.
Both planes burned in hard, so I doubt anyone survived the initial impact with the ground. Both aircraft were then engulfed in a ball of fire. Photos after the fire don’t show much of any thing left. Couple wingtips, folded up B-17 tail section, and an eery as fuck prop with one blade buried to the hub and the other two sticking up.
I’m hearing reports of 6 fatalities, but don’t know that accuracy. Also don’t know if that included the P-64 or just the B-17.
I’ll say though, I only did flying lessons as a kid, and haven’t been at the controls in decades. I’m an aviation fan and I remember much of the basics is flying. So take all this with a grain of salt, as this is all conjecture based on what I remember and what I saw on four different angles of the impact and crash. I am no expert on this subject by any stretch.
