Long Term Storage of a GTI

ataman

Ready to race!
So I just got the news that I will deploying for 8 months. During this time, I will be storing my car either in our drive way, I will try to put it in a garage but that does not seem possible right now.

I plan to get it polished and waxed. I plan to raise the car so there is no load on the tires. Fresh oil change just before I leave. Cover the car with a good quality car cover.

Is there anything else I should be concerned about? Any other ideas?

Fuel stabilizer and battery tender

Instead of the battery tender I would just go ahead and disconnect the battery and call it a day.

Fuel Stabilizer is a good idea though, my understanding is that with ethanol being mixed into gas now, it absorbs moisture and can cause issues if it sits for too long.

I was just going to disconnect the battery...

I never considered fuel... I think I will leave very small amount of gas in the car, use fuel stabilizer. When I come back, I can fill it up with fresh fuel before I ever start the engine... I think that will help?

Get a really good cover with nice padding on the inside, or as funny as this sounds, cover your car with a large duvet/blanket before putting the car cover on, as when the wind blows the cover will scratch against the paint and you'll be left with tiny micro scratches.

well, i guess it'll be ~90kg lighter.

If you read the first post, I said. I will raise the car so there is no load on tires...

A car suspension is not meant to be hung, you are far better off over inflating the tires like someone suggested and leaving the car on the ground then letting the suspension droop for 8 months.

The only thing you need to worry about for 8 months is the battery, Don't put any fuel stabilizer in it just top it off, these are very sealed systems the fuel will be fine. For the battery you can leave it connected and arm the alarm it puts the rest of the modules to sleep or you can disconnect it doesn't matter it will be dead eitherway when you get back unless there is a tender on it. I would just pick up a cheap solar charger from say costco or harbor freight vs a battery tender this way remains plugged in. With a normal battery tender you have to worry about someone borrowing your extension cord or not plugging it back in if they move the car.

Oh I forgot most importantly, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE have someone go start it every once in a while. This is the absolute worst possible thing you could do to a car in storage.
