I'm finally getting around to writing this. Only took me one blown motor 😅
The day I brought him home

I bought this car on April 3rd, 2019. It was actually my second choice to a 2010 Audi A5, but the A5 wouldn't be ready before my rental was up. When I test drove the GTI, it was hands down the fastest thing I've ever driven (I haven't driven many fast things - I test drove a C5 vette, but being inexperienced in RWD I didn't want to get on it too hard). I even said "Nah, this is just too fast for me." Mind you, this is a stock* GTI
*or so I thought
My favorite picture

Well, I bought it. Got it to 138mph on the way home.
Few days later I'm going all through the car, and I notice the springs are aftermarket Eibachs, and the shifter (which I had suspected was aftermarket) was mated to a diesel-geek short-throw shifter. It was loud and under WOT on turns would pop, but I checked the exhaust and it was stock 🤷‍♂️ Figured it just came that way from the factory. In fact, with this whole car, I was thoroughly impressed with how sporty, yet refined, it was from the factory. A rough ride because of those springs, but still nice. After warping the brakes doing speeds I shouldn't be, I bought front rotors better fit for cooling (ECS drilled and slotted one-piece).

I also carried over a bad habit from my Scion tC. There's a reason I've nicknamed my car "the Golf Cart," and well...
The Golf Cart

In the summer I have a tendency to pull off my doors. While I've never been pulled over for it, I've had cops pull up next to me and tell me to go put my doors on, and that it's illegal blah blah blah. Upon research, I'm allowed to remove the mirrors, however removing the structural supports from the door is illegal 🤷‍♂️ I've come up with a solution which you'll see later.

Fast forward two tickets, one taco truck, and one hit and run later, and it's mid-December and I need another upgrade. Originally I decide on some subframe locking collars and a downpipe, but after talking to some friends and hearing I would need a tune for the downpipe (I didn't know much about modifying cars, yet) I decided to cancel that and get a rear sway bar (my second choice). From the beginning I wanted to dial in the noise and the handling, the power was quite alright. Upon installing the locking collars, I notice "ECS" on the dogbone insert and "SPM" written along the downpipe mount 😐 That's when I started realizing I had no idea what mods were on the car.
We have fun :)

Not that it mattered much. Two weeks later, late December 28th, my car started knocking. December 29th it seized entirely. I only had two codes: "knock sensor" and "camshaft position."
After a hearty 30 minutes of sobbing in my car, I had it towed home to formulate my gameplan, because I still owed nearly 12k on it.

I - foolishly - decided to buy a parts car. This is an entire adventure itself, and a very costly one. But mid-January, I had a second GTI in my driveway, this one a 2011 DSG. I got the exact same color and doors because I wanted to pull body panels to replace on my first one.
Twinning!

Here's the thing: tearing into my engine only made me find more mods. Not only was it an SPM downpipe - what I'd failed to notice before was the catalytic converter - or, rather, lack thereof. And mated to the engine was a Spec stage 3+ clutch and lightweight flywheel.

I replaced the RMS on the new engine with an iABED billet RMS, the clutch and flywheel (both were warped) with an ECS lightweight stage 2 kit, and put on a billet bleeder block with a braided clutch line.

New engine goes in, with some new 034Motorsport Street Density engine and trans mounts, gets hooked up, and after replacing the starter... We have life. 60 days after it died.

Now, it's worth mentioning that the extent of my real world mechanic experience is replacing a CV axle on my old Scion tC and a couple oil changes. This swap just really wasn't that hard; the hardest part was having the proper tools.

While diagnosing a boost leak from the engine install, I decided to scratch that boy-racer itch and installed a Turbosmart Kompact DP BOV. I also took my two damaged doors and made... well, I made this. I'll definitely be polishing them up and painting them
Can't wait for the good weather

And here we are today. Since its rebirth I've done more thorough testing and found it to be running 305ish lbs-ft of torque at the crank, and 240ish hp at the wheels (numbers are based on Torque Pro in 4th gear pulls, no way I was doing a 5th gear pull on the street. Also I know one number is crank and one is wheel, unfortunately those were my only options). I've wrapped the roof black and installed a K&N Typhoon intake, an ECS oil catch can, deAutoLED headlights and color-switching fog lights, a tow-hook mount kit, and soon, custom polyethylene mudflaps and R8 coils.
New roof wrap

It truly feels like I've owned this car for years and it's barely been one. Without a doubt, this car is truly a part of me, cheesy as it sounds

I'm going to go into a lot of my ownership on my YouTube channel in the coming weeks. I'm going on a 10k mile road trip around the US, from Blue Ridge Parkway and the Tail of the Dragon to the PCH, up through old Idaho highways, down to the Bonneville Salt Flats and Pikes Peak (my all-time driving dream), through Glacier National Park (if it reopens in time 🤞) and to the Tunnel of Trees. And these are only half the places. I'm calling it the Ultimate Driver's Road Trip, and I'm attempting to hit (nearly) every single driver's road in the US. I have a follow-drone and GoPro for some epic driving and scenic shots, and I'm camping in my hammock and sleeping in my car for the whole trip (might stay at a hotel once or twice for a shower). I'm going to have to sort out uploads, but I'll figure it out.

It's been a hell of a year and I can't wait for more ❤

I've done a bunch of mods/work in this last week:
  • added a Sony XAX-AV100 head unit
  • added R8 coils
  • air intake is being replaced under warranty
  • injectors cleaned
  • valves cleaned
  • engine's first oil change (with a LiquiMoly flush and ceramic coat)
  • coolant flush
  • engine bay cleaned
  • a multitude of VAG-COM tweaks (huge thanks to @uglybastard), most importantly changing the XDS to 2; otherwise, a bunch of lighting and QOL tweaks
  • rear rotors, pads, and calipers swapped for my parts car brakes (good condition but the rotors will need replacing after my trip, and I'll probably do Red Stuff pads at all 4 corners)
  • RSB end links adjusted - these were poorly adjusted when I installed them because I forgot. I only had them on a week before I blew my motor, so I haven't gotten around to adjusting them until now
Still to do before I leave tomorrow:
  • spark plugs changed
  • brake/clutch fluid flush

This is all to prepare for my trip. I was supposed to leave on Wednesday, but the intake wasn't going to be done until today and I realized I should have them clean my valves while they're in there, so should be all done Friday, after which I'll attempt to bleed my own brakes for the first time. Also I've never replaced my own spark plugs, is there something I'm supposed to do with gapping the tips or are they usually already gapped to the proper distance?

Does this tear up axles? I read that somewhere a while ago and filed that under "research later" in my brain, but never got around to it because my brain doesn't have a secretary.

some come pregapped but checking before install is cheap insurance to prevent rework. only other thing ill make note of is to make sure you properly torque the spark plugs. a while abck i talked with someone getting misfires and they torque checked the plug on that misfire and that fixed it.

First I've heard of this, I've been running mine at setting "2" for just over a year now with no trouble and a few months of really hard driving lol. I definitely would have looked further into it if I had known, but everything I read at the time said it was more or less fine.

The only con I've come across is increased brake pad wear in the rear 🤷‍♂️

I'm also in the south so maybe rust plays a factor for the axles in northern regions? My GTI has never seen snow, but my last car (05 Acura TSX) snapped an axle. It spent most of its life in NY so the axles were rusted pretty significantly, along with almost every single bolt on that car haha.

Yeah, when this VagCom setting was first found there was lots of worry about the GTI not being prepared to dial that up and possible issues with axles and tearing boots and other things. Probably easy to find those talks in the vagcom tweaks threads where people talked about all these settings when the cars were new.

Over the years I don't think I ever remember seeing a single post about issues with axles of any sort - let alone related to this setting. So I think the real-world evidence points to the mk6 GTI being able to handle dialing up XDS. just fine.

Speaking of which... maybe I should go bump mine up a bit...

Yeah I remember seeing a thread on how the VW Scirocco R came with the higher setting from the factory and had similar parts, so most assumed it was fine. I did a decent amount of looking before I adjusted and never came across it so I imagine no one has run into that issue. 🤷‍♂️

Knowing my luck though I'll be the first haha!

But I recommend increasing the steering ratio/weight/resistance as well. I forget what the name is through OBDEleven but I adjusted the steering along with XDS and it was much better for steering feel and turn-in. You really feel it kick in when tossing it around corners above like 50-55 mph. Below that and it isn't very noticeable.

Speaking on the XDS...
Two days ago I reached Tail of the Dragon on my trip. My car handles phenomenally. It's literally got me rethinking all my future suspension and power mods because honestly I don't think it lacks anything.
The two biggest things that I changed before my trip handling-wise were XDS and my end link settings. I don't know if it was one of those mods on particular that food this or a combination of the two but there wasn't a single point where I feel my car's FWD was plunging me into turns, and I never kicked out the back end. It has completely blown me away.

+1, can definitely notice a difference by changing it and driving through some mid-high speed twisties. Fresh rear brakes will grab hard and pull the car around a corner beautifully.

My brakes did god's work on TOTD. I have footage of the smoke just rolling off the front pads. I'm putting in an order for EBC Red Stuffs front and back for when I get home, but I have a lot of pad left. Parts I need to order ASAP:
  • Megan Racing toe arms for the rear (if needed)
  • ECS drilled/slotted rear discs to match the front
  • EBC Red Stuffs front and back
  • Updated chain tensioner kit
  • Adjustable upper control arms for the rear (maybe)
  • An SPM catback, maybe. In talks with a forum member but this is last priority.
  • A fucking replacement for this damn pancake pipe. I'm getting a not insignificant amount of turbo lag. Maybe throttle pipe, too

Also, my turbo started slowly making a new noise around working, and it's only gotten louder. Not that I'm complaining, because it sounds awesome: it sounds like turbo flutter, but it sounds like it's from a turbo much bigger than my k03. I was worried this was the infamous wastegate rattle so I looked up videos and it's definitely not. But that got me looking at wastegate replacements.
Are these aftermarket internal wastegates a good solution? I'm not finding much in the forums about their effectiveness. If it prevents wastegate failure and, subsequently, turbo failure, I'm in. I sold my old turbo so I don't want to buy another.
